Dental Implants

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer a natural looking replacement for missing or damaged adult teeth. Most dental implants are comprised of a titanium screw implanted into the bone, and a post, to which the prosthesis attaches. Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and can also provide a stable foundation for a removable partial or complete dentures.

Dental implants are artificial roots (usually made of titanium) that are surgically placed into the jaw bone by Dr. Northcutt. Crowns attached to implants are very natural looking and enhance or restore a patient’s smile.

Dental implants are also the best way to stabilize overdentures. Implants make it possible to have an overdenture without the bulky palate of a traditional denture (sits in the roof of the mouth) that can cause a patient to gag. Implants firmly anchor the dental prosthesis, which means no more suffering from ill-fitting, loose dentures.

Dental implants offer support and help maintain a patient's bone level.

Dental implants restore functionality to the jaw, making speaking, eating, and chewing easier.

Dental Implants | What Is Involved?

The process of getting dental implants require more than one visit over a few months to allow proper bone integration and strength. X-rays and impressions are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant.

While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself for up to six months. Depending on the type of implant, we may need to see a patient again to set the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place.

After several weeks of healing a crown (artificial tooth) is made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. After a healing period, the crown securely attaches to the implant, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient.

Dental Implants for Dentures. If a patient is having an implant placed to stabilize a denture or overdenture, the head portion of the implant looks like a ball.  This ball fits firmly into the retaining mechanism, and together these structures hold the overdenture at a designated level. T

he overdenture will sit comfortably on the gum tissue, and it can withstand significant amounts of pressure and natural force.

You will receive home care instructions when your treatment is completed. Good oral hygiene and eating habits, along with regular dental cleanings, will aid in the life of your new implant.
