A full denture or partial denture is a removable dental appliance that is a replacement for missing teeth and their surrounding tissue. We make dentures to closely resemble a patient's natural teeth and many times this enhances one's smile.
There are two types of denture:
Complete Dentures. Complete, or full dentures, are used when all of a patient's teeth are missing.
Partial Dentures. Partial dentures are made when there are still natural teeth that remain. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, but they also prevent other teeth from shifting.
The reasons that people need dentures are numerous:
Complete Dentures for loss of all teeth in upper and/or lower arch.
Partial Dentures for loss of several teeth in an arch.
Improving chewing, speech, and digestion.
Enhancing smile and facial tissues.
The first denture is called an "immediate" denture, and it is placed when we extract a patient's teeth. Immediate dentures are crafted in advance and are immediately set after we remove damaged and diseased teeth–this prevents a patient from being without teeth during the healing process.
A secondary, permanent denture, will be made about six months after a patient's gums have healed. We can make adjustments and place soft denture relines while the tissue is healing.
Dentures are durable dental appliances and can last many years with proper care. Sometimes dentures have to be repaired, readjusted or remade due to normal wear, soft tissue contours, and changes in bone.
The process of getting a complete denture requires two to three appointments. We create a complete or partial denture by using precise impressions and measurements. With a couple of “try-in” appointments, we can help to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final appointment, we precisely adjust and place the appliance, providing a comfortable and natural fit.
It is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty; this will subside as your muscle and tissue get used to the dentures.
There is not a lot of maintenance required for a denture. However, proper oral care and denture cleaning will help the longevity of your dental appliance.
